This short practical course is designed to give practising or aspiring managers a good strong foundation on which to build key management & leadership skills - giving them the boost they need to help them face new challenges everyday and generate positive results in the workplace.

Module 1: Welcome & Induction
This introductory session covers your understanding of the programme and its style, provides you with more information about the ILM and details how to get the most out of your learning and the support you can expect as you progress through the modules.
Module 2: Understanding the management role
This session covers the various aspects of management and leadership including the differences and levels within these roles.
Module 3 Managing Communication
This session concentrates on the importance of good communication in the workplace and its benefits and the drawbacks of poor communication. You will also cover how to recognise different methods of communication such as body language, develop effective listening and questions skills and learn how to lead group discussions.
Module 4: Developing your personal effectiveness
This session covers how to set and achieve real goals, before moving towards learning more about recognising aggression and passivity, facing up to challenging situations, the various benefits and down sides of delegation before learning about recognising stress and developing stress minimisation techniques.
Module 5: Managing under performance
Included in this module is how to set staff expectations, 'nipping issues that arise in the bud' and plenty of practise handling realistic issues.
Module 6: Assessing your leadership capability and performance
Reviews your own preferred leadership style and ability to motivate people and build commitment to achieve the organisations goals. Explains the concept of emotional intelligence and provides practical help to improve your EQ.
Each module is delivered using a variety of practical examples and focuses on getting you to use your real life workplace examples to assist learning and understanding. Most modules are delivered in group situations which opens the opportunity to learn more about other working styles and practices, have group discussions and receive feedback.
Participants must attend all sessions and submit two work based assignments for assessment. Everyone will be given the opportunity of a one to one coaching session lasting 2 hours.
